iPhones are too good to be confined to just two cell service providers. Rumors before the phones were even officially announced said Apple planned to make them open so they could be used on any/many cell phone carriers.
Sadly the reality of the cell phone industry changed Apple's plans, and the phones were confined to first just AT&T and later Verizon as well. Still, people have been jailbreaking iPhones since they first came out.
