Endemic to a tiny area in the northern Andes of Colombia, this resplendent hummingbird remained undiscovered until 1967 by photographer John Dunning. The Eriocnemis mirabilis, or Colorful Puffleg is so rare that less than 200 specimens remain in the wild. Protected for now, their future is more assured thanks to heroic preservation efforts from a concerned few.
